The brief to the architect was “to get as close to the water as possible and make the most of the magnificent views”.
The pleasing result, a multi level cedar clad pole construction that is in total harmony with its environment, stepping down on a promontory with very little visible land below. Looking out from the inside one gets the impression that the building is suspended over water.
The panoramic uninterrupted 230-degree views are spectacular, stretching from Opua harbour to the right along the Okiato – Russell peninsular to Paihia, Waitangi and the Kerikeri / Mataka coastline to the left and north.
The unique guest lodge features a huge guest lounge occupying the whole of the upper floor with floor to ceiling windows, a wrap around balcony, an open wood burning fireplace; with an open plan kitchen and dining room taking up the mezzanine floor above.
Persian rugs, comfortable leather lounges, an eclectic mix of Oriental and European furniture, original paintings by well known artists and other art, luxurious plush carpets, add warmth, understated elegance and a rich cosy ambience.
The 4 guest bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms and private balconies, and the 1 bedroom studio apartment are situated on the 3 lower floors.
The owner’s residence is in a separate building below the main house.
The Guest Lodge has also a current commercial “Warrant of Fitness” cover, with monthly inspections as well as all the necessary insurances including a public liability cover.
